Life’s Highway

Share the lifetime experiences of our four characters as they journey from youth to old age. See how transport choices are affected by social background, the effects of war, changing leisure opportunities and the challenges of poverty, disability or advancing age.

Along the way you can enjoy a classic red London bus, a caravan furnished in 1930s style, and a period garage populated with the voices of local characters. Archive film will take you on a nostalgic trip through the 20th Century to find out ‘How We Travelled’ by bus, coach, train, bicycle and motor car, or you can join the lads of ‘The Fish Run’ as they drive their lorries full of fresh fish from Aberdeen to Manchester every day. Admire our specially commissioned mural ‘Spirit and Resilience’ by local artist Jessica Malorie which reflects life during World War Two. This exhibition is part of a larger project generously supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund to acquire, document and make accessible the fascinating Archive Collection put together over several decades by motoring journalist Nick Baldwin.
